The Best of British: Places to Eat for a Sense of Home!

02 Jun, 2014 / Posted By Mayuri

Mention British food and everyone will say Fish and Chips - and yes it’s a British dish, but there’s so much more to enjoy about British food than that. Whether you are craving a comfort food dish or a dish showcasing the best of local British ingredients, we share the scoop on our favourite places to dine in Dubai from fine dining to more traditional pub grub there’s something here for everyone.

Rivington GrillRivington Grill

Location : Souk al Bahar & Madinat

Average Price : 250 AED

Rivington Grill, or Rivi as it’s affectionately known to it’s regulars offers authentic ‘Back to Basics’ seasonally inspired British cuisine at two venues. You can dine overlooking the Dubai Fountains and Burj Khalife from the terrace of Souq al Bahar, or, my personal preference overlooking Burj Al Arab from one of the five terraces at Jumeirah Madinat. Menus change often and are evocative of a quintessentially English menu, currently in season dishes include Avon River Trout with broadbeans and crushed potatoes and the classic pudding of Strawberry Eton Mess. Not to be missed.

Reform Social GrillReform Social Grill

Location : The Lakes, Emirates Hills

Average Price : 100 AED

This is a recent import from London, with a gastropub theme and menu and a garden. For those fancying a traditional roast, the Reform Grill serves these up every Saturday and Sunday. Comfort food including fish pie (a posh version with scallops) or nursery puddings including sticky toffee pudding and rhubarb crumble are set to take you back to memories ‘old blighty’ albeit with an modern and up to date twist. A La Carte and Set menu options are available.

The IvyThe Ivy

Location : Jumeirah Emirates Towers

Average Price : 350 AED

In London, this is a popular eatery peppered with it’s fill of the rich & famous meaning that people book months in advance to get a table. Booking is still recommended, but thankfully the queue for a table is much less. Think classic dishes when dining here particular favourites include Lobster Thermidor or grilled Dover Sole and to finish the British classic of Baked Alaska made to share *sighs or comfort food of warm doughnuts. If you want to stray from the British theme there other treats with Scandinavian iced berries with hot white chocolate sauce top of our list to try next.

Dhow & AnchorDhow & Anchor

Location : Jumeirah Beach Hotel

Average Price : 250 AED

Newly renovated and named D&A ~ The Dhow and Anchor provides a more modern British themed restaurant and bar serving up British classics, albeit at a much higher price point than the it’s predecessor simply called The Dhow and Anchor. The menu includes a daily roast with all the trimmings, along with British staples including Scotch Eggs, a posh fish pie with smoked haddock, salmon and lobster claw with puddings including traditional favourites of summer pudding with clotted cream or a British cheese plate. Sporting events are screened here too.

McgettigansMcGettigans

Locations : JLT and World Trade Centre

Average Price : 150 AED

This Irish venue, as it’s name suggests is at the JLT and World Trade Centre. Both venues are popular for watching sports and of course celebrations for Irish holidays such as St Patricks Day. The crowd is lively and the atmosphere tends to get more rowdy and loud as the day goes on.  Food is reminiscent of Ireland with classic dishes including Irish Stew and Boiled bacon with champ mash. Upstairs in the World Trade Centre is the D Upstairs offering contemporary Irish dishes and a more relaxed seating area, prices are more expensive than downstairs but the menu reflects this with traditional items such as Beef and Guinness suet pudding sitting alongside finer dishes.

2555cafe25’ 55’ Café Bistro and Sport Lounge

Location : Dubai Yacht Club

Average Price : 250 AED

More an international menu than primarily British, this Café Bistro has made the cut in this article purely because of it’s great fish and chips, yes a British staple, as well as it’s traditional English breakfast. Served in a skillet you are treated to the full works whist watching the world go past your table as you dine overlooking Dubai Marina.

UndergroundThe Underground Pub

Location : Habtoor Grand Dubai

Average Price : 150 AED

An English pub awaits you at this underground sports bar. This is a lively place to hangout and watch sports events on the large tv screens. It gets a little smoky at times, but has the feel of a little bit of England transported to Dubai. Staple menu items include a bacon and egg sandwich as well as loaded potatoe skins and of course fish and chips. Hosts quiz night and live music too.

Bobs Fish & ChipsBob’s Fish and Chips

Location : Dubai Marina, Business Bay and Tecom

Average Price : 50 AED

The clue is in the title... this is, in our opinion, the best Fish and Chip casual dining/takeaway place in Dubai. They serve particularly good fish and chips, pickled eggs and onions, doner kebabs, home made fishcakes and a whole host of other British staple dishes including the obligatory tub of gravy for the true northern English experience. Dine in or get it delivered – sadly though not wrapped in newspaper for the full British takeaway experience.
