Live Music & Good Food - a Restaurant Guide

06 Nov, 2014 / Posted By Mayuri

Music is food for the soul and mind, and we can think of no better way to accompany this spiritual feast by feeding our grumbling bellies alongside.

Here is our selection of the best places across town where incredible live music accompanies first-rate food. We suggest you call in advance to book and ensure that your favourite bands are playing that night. Get ready to break into those tap shoes!

Jazz@Pizza Express

Music: Jazz, Medium
Cuisine: Italian
Location: Jumeirah Lake Towers
Price per person: AED 120

This pizza place is fun, casual and chilled out. We love the buzzing and unpretentious ambience inside this rustic joint and the food simply adds to the wonderful experience. What makes Jazz@Pizza Express the hippest place to hang out at, however, is its live jazz band. A relatively newcomer in this city, jazz music is thriving in the underground scene, and more restaurants are now offering this experience. We believe the best way to get acquainted with this buzzing music is by having a few, fresh and flavoursome pizzas alongside. Try their leggera (light) ones for a delicously crispy crust.

The IvyThe Ivy

Music: Classics; Quiet
Cuisine: British
Location: Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Sheikh  Zayed Road
Price per person: AED 325

This London import is an ideal place to bring your date to for a romantic meal of classic British fodder. What would elevate your experience even further is the crooning in background. We all know how tricky live music can be: too loud and your night is ruined, too vague and it redundantly gets drowned in the chatter amongst diners; volume is key and The Ivy checks all the boxes in that respect. Beautiful tunes, impeccable service and quality grub makes this a highly recommendable restaurant.

Al Hambra

Music: Spanish; Medium
Cuisine: Spanish
Location: Al Qasr Hotel, Madinat  Jumeirah
Price per person: AED 195

This eaterie is every Spain lover’s dream come true. Offering a wide range of tasty tapas dishes, Al Hambra is perfect to visit with a bunch of friends on a Thursday evening, but be sure to book in advance. The interiors are a mish mash of brick, terracotta, red furniture and wood, the staff is friendly and talks with an accent, and the buzzing ambience will transport you right back to Andalusia. What did it for us, however, was the beautiful Spanish live music and flamenco dance in the terrace. Sip on your sangrias and join in on the fun… olé!

Frankie's Bar & GrillFrankie’s Bar & Grill

Music: Jazz; Medium
Cuisine: Italian
Location: JBR
Price per person: AED 250

We have raved about this one as one of our favourite Italian restaurants in Dubai, and we will stress this point again: Frankie’s does sumptuous food, unforgettable live music and a classy, vibrant atmosphere that will take you back in the 1920s as you dance the night away by the piano with your date.

Trader Vic’s

Music: Latin; Loud
Cuisine: International
Location: Festival City Mall
Price per person: AED 200

This French-Polynesian themed hangout is popular for its exotic cocktails in funky vessels, its loud music and its kitsch interiors. We want to break the myth by proclaiming that Trader Vic’s is a lot more than just a place to have Mai Tais wearing Hawaiian floral shirts. The food is exquisite here, with the restaurant offering a wide selection of dishes from Japanese, Chinese, International and Continental cuisines. Reserve a table in the dining area away from the stage and the lounge, or make the most of the weather by having dinner in the terrace. The music, this way, will not be too obtrusive but loud enough to serenade your party by the Spanish tunes belted out by the Cuban band. After dinner, head over to the bar to dance some salsa and sip on some Tiki Puka Pukas.

Times of ArabiaTimes of Arabia

Music: Arabic folk; Medium
Cuisine: Arabic
Location: The Dubai Mall
Price per person: AED 135

A wonderful surprise inside a mall, Times of Arabia is an excellent place to wind down, relax and enjoy a fun-filled evening of live entertainment and delectable Levantine nosh (the hot fresh bread with hummus was heavenly). The traditional Egyptian tannoura dance will mesmerize your party; if you are attentive, you will notice that there is a story behind every performance. The arabic guitar strums set a pleasant mood throughout the restaurant and serve as a reminder that there is truly a raw, special quality in music that is played and heard live.

Antique BazaarAntique Bazaar

Music: Indian folk; Loud
Cuisine: Indian
Location: Four Points by Sheraton, Bur  Dubai
Price per person: AED 100

A band of three to four people sit on an elevated, cushioned stage to play beautifully composed Indian sufi music in this restaurant. The soulful and spiritual songs are somewhat of a mismatch when it comes to the mouthwatering, spicy food served here, but either aspect does not distract from the other; rather, your attention jumps from the music to the food and back without tarnishing the experience. Antique Bazaar has made us fans of ghazals (lyrical love poems set to traditional music).

Jazz@Pizza ExpressThe Rib Room

Music: Classics; Medium
Cuisine: Steakhouse
Location: Emirates Towers, Sheikh Zayed  Road
Price per person: AED 250

This new hot property in Dubai is now one of our favourite places for dining with live music in the background. Contrary to what one would believe, the tunes are not obnoxiously interfering; the music matches harmoniously with the excellent food and the elegant ambience. The staff is well-prepared and keen to help you, and the chef is sensitive to your wishes, delivering the perfect steak. Hold on to this one for that special night out with a loved one.
