  • "Excellent seafood dinner"

    4 Reviewed 2014-04-16 06:28:10 By JohnPaul2010

We enjoyed quite a lot La Mer restaurant: menu selection, food quality, service, reasonable bill. La Mer is located within Sofitel Corniche premises. This is a real advantage when coming from Dubai: the place can be reached easily (through Yas and Saadiyat islands highway or Sheikh Zayed highway and tunnel - formerly named Salam Street). La Mer is a perfect place to dine before joining the excellent Jazz Club. There is sufficient space between tables to enable a good privacy. Starters and main courses are delicious. I did not test the desserts but the baked hammour was a true delight. Beverage selection is fair enough.

Went for dinner. Very nice decor. We ordered our food and were brought an amuse Bouche of crab tartar and avocado. It was excellent and a great start. I ordered the apple and blue cheese salad next. Unfortunately next came the main courses the staff must have forgot about the salad. I had the octopus which was wow. One of the best cooked perfectly with a great sauce. My wife had the salmon. It was served with mashed potatoes cooked well but needed some salt a mushroom spinach salad the was very good. The salmon was over cooked. In addition they forgot the beurre blanc sauce. This was brought out part way through the meal. Final I wanted to order a after dinner drink and ask for the menu as the cordial cart looked promising. Unfortunately the menu was the wine menu which did not have any of the after dinner drinks on it. We left. Disappointed in the service and my wife's food. However gave them three stars because that octopus was great.

  • "Slightly "Fawlty""

    2 Reviewed 2014-02-26 04:45:17 By AbuDhabiSwithers

Lovers of the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers will be pleased to know that the spirit of Basil Fawlty lives on in this Abu Dhabi restaurant. We went to La Mer with high hopes of a great meal, not only because it was my wife's birthday, but also because we'd had a really excellent meal at the Thai Silk and Spice restaurant in the same hotel a few weeks previously. It didn't augur well that the front desk had no record of the booking I'd made the previous day, but after a short amount of umming and ahhing and sucking in of breath they placed us at a really lovely table by the window overlooking the Corniche. The ambience of the restaurant was very pleasant, marred only by some too-loud piped music that meant everybody around us had to talk loudly in order to be heard. The next mishap was when the wine that came to the table was different to the wine that I'd ordered. However because it was at least produced by the same vintner, the wine waiter wasn't going to accept this without a fight, and insisted that he'd brought the right one. We had to refer back to the wine list in order to settle the argument, when he finally conceded that we could have our chosen grape variety, not just something with a similar label. However it was only when the starters arrived that the performance went into full slapstick mode. My wife had ordered the pear and Roquefort salad, which unfortunately arrived without any Roquefort - surely a fairly critical component. Andrew Sachs would have been proud of our waitress's performance when we pointed this out, as she took my wife's fork out of her hand and delved around in the bowl in a hunt for the missing ingredient, then somewhat desperately tried to insist that a slice of pear was actually cheese. She gracefully admitted defeated after a taste test of the disputed item, and returned the salad to the kitchen. All of this would have been an amusing sideshow if the food was top notch, but unfortunately that wasn't quite the case... An amuse bouche of tempura prawn was delicious and suggested great things to come, as did the excellent bread selection. The Roquefort salad was very good indeed, especially once the missing cheese had been retrieved. However my starter of tuna tartar was very bland and disappointing. A soup course that followed was a mixed bag - the crustacean bisque was good, but my choice of lentil cappuccino was again very disappointing. It's not easy to get a poor lentil soup in this part of the world, but this one didn't taste of anything at all. Our main course was a seafood platter to share. The highlight of this was a really delicious pair of jumbo shrimp. Calamari and hammour were both OK, but the half lobster was small, tasteless and rubbery. A nice lemon sauce came to accompany the fish, and side dishes of salad, grilled vegetable and mashed potato were all really excellent and plentiful. For dessert we had a selection of sorbets, with mixed fruit and chocolate fondant. It was served with a great deal of pomp and ceremony involving liquid nitrogen, and tasted fabulous. In fact this was one of the nicest desserts I've had in Abu Dhabi. In summary, the food which was good was very good indeed, but the whole meal was inconsistent and left us a bit disappointed. One plus point was that the wine list had an excellent selection at what are (for Abu Dhabi) very reasonable prices. Regarding the service, to be fair it must be said that all the staff we interacted with were really lovely people. It just felt as though they hadn't worked in (or maybe been in?) a restaurant until that evening. It's a very common problem that Abu Dhabi hotels put staff in front of customers with only a bare minimum of training, but this was perhaps the most glaring example I've come across. More recent reviews seem to suggest that these teething problems have since been overcome, but I don't think I'll be going back to find out for myself.

For our 4 Th wedding anniversary We were looking for something special and we found it only by taking a chance on The Round Menu Putting La Mer one of the beast romantic restaurant is true in every respect The meal was perfection. Each dish was unique and commingled flavors that you'd never expect. The presentation was gorgeous as well. The hospitality and service provided by Amin and his team is great and the wine list focused and reasonably price. Fantastic thank you for a memorable time.
